Signature scent for a modern museum

Generation by Osmo collaborated with the Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) to design the museum's first-ever signature scent—for a seamless turnkey fragrance launch.

Sonic architecture meets scent innovation.

For the Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP) in Seattle—an artistic community space defined by its boundary-breaking spirit—its 25th anniversary called for something iconic.

Not a poster. Not a playlist.

A signature scent.

Generation was brought in to do what no one else could: translate sculpture and sound into a fragrance that could evoke MOPOP's brand, and honor its unique legacy.

The result was Electric Harmony, a bold and modern scent—born from art, powered by technology. An entirely new kind of brand experience.

From concept to shelf: a turnkey fragrance partnership.

Unlike traditional fragrance houses or white-label manufacturers, Generation offers a truly end-to-end custom service for brands looking to enter the world of scent. For MOPOP, we handled every step—from creative inspiration to final product delivery.

Here’s how we brought their signature scent to life:

1. Creative brief and inspiration

First, MOPOP shared their inspiration—an enormous sculpture in the heart of the museum, crafted by Seattle-based sound sculptor Trimpin. The iconic installation is formed out of over 500 electric guitars and 30 computers. It stands 50 feet tall, as a towering monument to sound and cultural evolution.

2. Scent development with Olfactory Intelligence.

The Generation team input the client's inspiration into our proprietary Olfactory Intelligence (OI) platform—the cutting-edge scent design system that transforms visual, emotional, and linguistic inputs into fragrance formula blueprints. This gave our perfumers a high-fidelity starting point.

3. Rapid prototyping.

Traditional fragrance creation can take 6–12 months. Thanks to our OI, robotic sampling, and an agile process centered on the client, we shipped MOPOP their first scent sample in just a few days.

4. Creative collaboration and iteration.

Working closely with the MOPOP team, we refined the formula through a fast-cycle feedback process.

“It was smooth, it was easy, and we were listened to,” said Toni Godwin Sells, MOPOP’s Chief Operations Officer. “We knew unanimously which one we wanted to move forward with.”

5. Turnkey branded packaging and production.

Once the final scent was approved, we designed a custom bottle and packaging that reflected MOPOP’s bold identity and their building's iconic purple facade—produced and fulfilled entirely through our East Coast operations hub in NYC and New Jersey.

6. Ready for launch.

With the scent finalized and production complete, the fragrance made its public debut for MOPOP’s 25th anniversary. The scent added a distinctive new layer to the celebration, transforming it into something both memorable and multi-sensory.

Meet Electric Harmony.

The spirit of the museum, bottled.

Scent notes:

Lemon. Linden blossom.

Rum extract.

Patchouli. Oud.

Through a blend of comforting woods, abstract citrus, and contemporary molecules, Electric Harmony evokes the textures and energy of sound. It’s a bright composition of green, marine, and metallic facets, with a mineral twist.

The formula also features two of Generation's proprietary new ingredients, Fractaline and Quasarine, which were discovered using Olfactory Intelligence (OI). Just like an electric guitar, the fragrance resonates—bold, modern, and full of character.

The scent is unisex, designed for a wide audience of museum visitors, creatives, and collectors alike.

Brand expansion through the medium of scent.

For MOPOP, this fragrance was both a celebration of legacy and a strategic extension of their brand. It was a way to:

• Turn space into experience: Visitors and community members can now carry home a piece of the museum, with a beautifully crafted and timeless memento.

• Expand product offerings: This custom scent opened the door to many other possible products like candles, diffusers, and more.

• Generate revenue and brand equity: More than just merch—Electric Harmony is art, created through the uncharted medium of scent.

• Reach new audiences: People far beyond Seattle can now experience the spirit of MOPOP in a completely new way. The scent offers an immersive connection—bottling its pulse for anyone, anywhere.

"[This collaboration] has opened up new creative possibilities, bringing the art of fragrance, Generation’s unique technology, and pop culture together in a way that’s never been done before," said Michele Y. Smith, Chief Executive Officer of MOPOP.
